Most of last year I was running for my own health and wellbeing, and maybe a little bit of fun. Running is something that very much supports my physical and mental health. Much of my working day is sat at a desk, so the opportunity to 'get up and move' is really valuable. Running also helps to exercise my heart and lungs and get some deep breathing happening. Additionally, mentally I find while running I am kind of having a break from everything else, which I think I can only really compare to being in the shower. A time/ place where you cant really do anything other than the thing you're doing; this helps to give my brain some space to process and 'move through' some thoughts. It is sometimes the time/ place when I get some great ideas too.
Amongst the fun of just being, and supporting my own wellbeing in 2024, towards the end of the year I added a little challenge to keep the motivation going through the end of the year and the darker, colder months (October, November, December). Getting up at 4.30am isn't always the easiest thing, especially the nght before, knowing I've got to get up at 4.30am; usually on a Sunday.
My first target was for 500 miles. Quickly though I realised I'd almost achieved that already, thanks to some amazing efforts earlier in the year. Which awesomely meant I achieved the 500 miles medal from Virtual Running Events, whoop! I then evolved that 500 mile target to be 622 miles (or rather 1,000km). Which I'm delighted to say I also achieved; finishing the year on 641 miles and with two very worn out trainers.
Now, for 2025, I'm going in early with the challenege(s). I have set an initial 500 miles target for the year, with the additional step up to 622 miles again. Other than last year this is a total I have only ever achieved once before. So doing this in back to back years, especially while adjusting to parent life would feel like an awesome achievement; and something I'd be super proud of in terms of protecting and supporting time and energy for my own wellbeing and health.
I am also adding in a new challenege to this year and that's to complete three virtual marathons. I have looked at these on the Virtual Runner UK app, and basically you have a 7 day window to complete the virtual marathon over as many sessions as you like. So, my plan is to run two half marathons within that 7 day window. For me this keeps the distance element I enjoy, and am challenged by. I'm really excited by these as it's something a little different to add into my running routine and will require that extra effort (and achievement).
It is a little scary to go in so early with challeneges that will require effort all year round, but I know I can do it, it's just doing it! The marathons add an exciting fun challenge which I really hope I can achieve.
I am please, excited and proud that I am keeping the running going and in a small, very specific way prioritising something that supports my wellbeing and health.
Do you have challenges or aspirations for your fitness in 2025, and are, or how are, those activities supporting your mental wellbeing?
